Mayor Bill De Blasio has stated that the schools in the NYC will be remained closed till September 2020. Although the classes will run online but the school sites will be remained closed till this September.
NYC the epicentre of this pandemic in the US has decided to close the schools. The Mayor stated that although this was not an easy decision to be made but this is the right decision at this point of time. The schools were closed down since March 16th and will be remained closed for further 4 months.
The NYC’s public school system is the largest in the country with about 1.1 million students. The decision has been made out of caution to shutter the schooling sites and continue with the online classes. NYC alone has 1,00,000 active Covid19 cases being reported so far. In this crisis situation it was the need of the hour that schools should be shutdown for a while. Despite of being reluctant about it, the Mayor had to take the decision anyway.
By March 23, the city will move to remote learning, and the system will be closed except for several dozen school buildings throughout the city, which will be used as “learning centers” to support the children of essential city workers like health care employees.
Schools will be closed until at least April 20, after the next spring break, but could stay closed for a much longer time, Mr. de Blasio said.
City school buildings will stay open for kids to pick up food this week and the city will then find alternate places for students who need food to access it. Students who don’t have computers at home will be given laptops, and the city will try to help students who don’t have access to the internet get online.
